Why the Indian left is a lost battle

Today in the news were a bunch of students who set out to protest against the terrible air quality in Delhi. This has been an issue for a long time now and its been international news as well – Delhi’s pollution levels are so high that habitation is a risk in the capital city. The AAP government was dethroned over this issue as it failed miserably to even address it and since then the BJP government has been seen doing bits and pieces towards cleaning the air and environment in Delhi. How much of it is PR and how much real; we don’t know, but the funny story that unfolded today is on the backdrop of this very factor.

The group of youngsters set out to protest against the terrible AQI and apparently seek ‘breathable air’. However, the staging soon showed its true colours as the protestors raised pro-Maoist slogans, cried in favour of Maoist Commander Madvi Hidma, sprayed pepper spray on police personnel who questioned their intentions and attempted to disperse the crowd and allegedly misbehaved with the police even in custody. They have been handed to police custody for the next two days and will face interrogations for possible Maoist links.

The Indian left is trying terribly hard to put up an act of being genuinely concerned about factors like the environment and social welfare but it is so morally deprived that the show cannot stand for even a matter of minutes. Every group ends up displaying its loathing towards the ruling government and puts up a desperate and often violent show of rebellion against the police forces that actually try to keep peace. Thanks to social media, however, the agenda mostly fails and the message of the Indian left’s intellectual bankruptcy is received loud and clear by the general audience.

Neither students (unless radically inclined) nor young adults are allured by the radical display of desperation that the Indian left puts up. More and more youngsters, especially Gen-Z, are seen swaying away from what was considered the ‘cool’ act of rebellion and inclining towards fact-checking and neutrality. Well, as long as the left wing intelligentsia keeps making blunders like today, the youth are arguably safe in this country. I just hope that there is enough social media literacy to go around and keep the misleading propaganda at bay.
