Journal entry: Indians treat India like a dumpster.

This might be my first and (hopefully) only negative post about this country because I’ve never been inclined to throw criticisms when there can be no good consequence. You’ll meet plenty of people who say this is bad and that is terrible in India but thanks to my upbringing and the kind of exposure I’ve had, I’ve always said good things about the country and displayed a quite evident disdain towards the ones who always point fingers at everything that is wrong here.

Until now I guess. No, I’m not black-pilled or anything but I’m simply reaching a tipping point of my tolerance against the utter lack of civic sense in the population of this country. About a month ago, there was a debate on X (Twitter) that followed a foreign tourist’s post about Indians treating India like a dump. It was a plain fact that even the most devout patriots were forced to agree.

There is an unapologetic lack of civic sense that makes a large part of this country’s population behave in despicably uncivilized manners – educated people included. Discarding thrash everywhere, the intolerable habit of spitting, not using toilets even when they are available, disregard for traffic rules, and a general sense of inconsideration towards everyone else – all an indication of a lack of love and respect towards the country in general.

It does not matter what educational institutions and the governments do. In fact, there are plenty of governmental and non-governmental organizations trying hard to inculcate this necessary civic sense in people but somehow, the generation disregard comes easy to most of us. And it is terrible.

It doesn’t matter what great things we dream of for this country. There is certainly a small section of people who are mindful about keeping the country clean and I hope they get the best things in the world. But the larger population that behaves with utter disregard is that force driving the country backwards and it’ll never allow any true progress. This was validated when Vande Bharat trains were vandalized during their trial runs in Chhattisgarh. Don’t even get me started on the disastrous stampede that killed seven people at Tirupathi because ‘devotees’ could not follow a queue.

On  a personal level, I feel hopeless to see even college going students – the ones supposed to be the flagbearers of the idea of a new India, loitering public spaces with zero remorse. What could the system do if the general public is, even in 2025, so apathetic about displaying basic civic sense. I guess the responsible ones can continue leading by example and simply pray that the good side of the country is protected from the inconsiderate ones.
