Films that made impact: The Stoning of Soraya M

The Enduring Impact of the movie “The Stoning of Soraya M” is a beacon for human rights and feminist movements. Based on a book, the movie depicts a horrendous practice employ to ‘punish’ a woman for a crime that she did not commit, showing a complete lack of sympathy or consideration.

“The Stoning of Soraya M”, is a 2008 drama film directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh. It is based on a book titled “La Femme Lapidee” (which translates to ‘the stoned woman’) authored by French-Iranian journalist Freidoune Sahebjam. The book was first published in 1990 and later translated to English in 1994.

‘The Stoning of Soraya M’ is a 2008 film based on this book which narrates a true story that will wrench your gut. Know for a fact that you will emerge disturbed and angry from the film because it puts on display an absolute lack of consideration that a society gives to a woman who minded her own business. It  is a powerful and thought-provoking cinematic experience that has left an indelible mark on the human rights and feminist landscapes. Based on the true story of Soraya Manutchehri, an Iranian woman brutally stoned to death in 1986, the film sheds light on the heinous practice of stoning and the oppressive treatment of women in Iran. The story was written by Freidoune Sahebjam based on the recollection of Soraya’s aunt Zahra; an element that is recreated in the film as well.

‘The Stoning of Soraya M’ is a simple film in terms of making but is dry and intense throughout. Soraya is a simple woman who knows not much of the world and only worries about taking care of her children, especially her two girls. Her husband, a serial adulterer, has hopes of marrying a younger girl but needs to get rid of Soraya for that to happen. He’s unwilling to grant her the honour of a legal divorce because that would mean having to pay alimony, so he frames her and depicts her to be an adulterer in front of the dreaded little society that they were a part of. Soraya was stoned to death for the crime she did not commit, even by her own sons who believed their pathetic excuse of a father over their mother. The excruciating pain that Soraya feels is filmed to induce a tearful experience among viewers who have admitted time and again that the film is a highly relevant social, human rights milestone.

Amnesty International has recognized the film’s significance, stating that it “raises awareness about the horrific practice of stoning and the broader issue of violence against women in Iran.” The organization has utilized the film as a tool to mobilize support for their campaigns against stoning and gender-based violence. The film’s impact extends beyond the screen, influencing the human rights movement in tangible ways as well.

“The Stoning of Soraya M” has brought international attention to the practice of stoning, sparking widespread condemnation and fueling advocacy efforts. Eventually, the awareness that the film raised coincided with increased pressure on Iranian authorities to reform laws and practices related to stoning. In 2013, Iran’s penal code was amended to restrict stoning, although it remains a possible punishment in certain circumstances. The film has also become a rallying cry for feminist movements, highlighting the struggles faced by women in patriarchal societies and inspiring solidarity and action. But most importantly, the film’s portrayal of Soraya’s story has provided a platform for survivors of gender-based violence to share their experiences, fostering a sense of community and support.

“The Stoning of Soraya M” is a socially important film that has made a lasting impact on human rights and feminist movements. Its influence extends beyond the screen, inspiring awareness, policy changes, empowerment, and support. I wouldn’t state that the film has solved any problems, but this is as bold and important as cinema gets. I had watched it when I was a student as an academic requirement but it has stuck with me ever since. Revisiting it has allowed me to understand how relevant such films are even today, as the world still struggles with basic human rights violations. As a testament to the power of storytelling, the film continues to be a vital tool in the fight against gender-based violence and oppression. This film is a true example for how the entertainment industry can join hands with important social causes and make a difference in the world.
