As a 90’s kid, I feel like I grew up during Bollywood’s most romantic era. 2000s was when the mega stars like the Khans and Hrithik Roshan ruled the industry in association with Yash Chopra and Karan Johar making hyper-realistic films. Music really had the best time during this time. There was a carry over from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s where musical legends like Kishore Kumar, RD Burman, Lata Mangeshkar, Lakshmikanth Pyarelal etc made magic using the little technology they had. 2000’s really took things to the next level and produced musical masterpieces that I grew up with, and still can’t grow over.
I do believe that the creative content that we grow up with has a power over our subconscious. It is perhaps linked to our nostalgia and childhood selves that we do not want to let go of, so nothing really connects to us as well as the movies and music that we grew up watching/listening. Even though the musicians of the world continue to produce musical masterpieces, I am personally still hung up on AR Rahman’s older days, Sonu Nigam and Shaan’s debut days and romance songs from 15 years ago.
To answer the question from the prompt, there’s no particular genre of music that I’m fond of. I love all forms of music – but I always prefer songs with good lyrics over music. Understanding lyrics and possibly connecting to them enriches a musical experience for me. Even today, I am not shy of exploring musical experiments that new age musicians are venturing into – especially Indie prodigies. It is easy to impress me when it comes to music. But the fact will always remain that Hindi and Kannada music from the 2000’s is my obsession. Nothing will ever top the experience of those for me.
Literally, no match for this era till now !!
