I’m that ‘takes a year to finish a web series’ kind. I don’t necessarily binge so it takes me a while to get through a series, especially ones as long as Suits, and so its natural that the characters and the storyline is more a part of my life than they probably intend to be. Avid viewers would understand that delving into a series can (sometimes) be just as proficient as delving into a book when its well made. And so after a prolonged period of time when we have to let the characters go, we don’t feel ready at all.
‘Suits’ is as good as any web series ever made. I had this experience of ‘delving into the world of the series’ with Downton Abbey, Anne with an ‘E’, and The Cook of Castamar. [Of course, there were other fantasy series but I’m comparing just the realistic ones here.] I cannot stop awing over how well writers create complex characters that are white, black and grey at the same time. And it is immensely satisfying when they throw curveball after curveball, rather ruthlessly, at the characters and make them emerge through tunnels after tunnels with personal growth and renewed versions, while keeping their core nature impact. Suits masters this concept over a span of 9 whole seasons where the characters go through everything – change a whole lot but remain true to their core traits. Even as the series ends, Harvey is still the best closer, Jessica is still the elegant fighter, Donna is still the efficient whisperer, Louis is still the erratic softie, Mike is still the moral compass of the group and Rachel – well Rachel ended up marrying a Prince in real life and went her own way. They did bring in newer characters in the last few seasons who blended right into the ambiance formerly created.
Its refreshing and comforting at the same time to sit through the whole duration of Suits because new things are introduced throughout the series while the core idea of ‘colleagues like family’ is kept sternly intact. Of course, alongside the aesthetic of every character presented wearing thousands of dollars worth suits and dresses – no wonder they named the whole series after that and delivered the aesthetic for us to devour. Every cast member ate that element and left no crumbs. Its interesting how they chose the title over the aesthetic of appearances for a show that’s more about wit, law and interpersonal relationships. An impressive perspective.
The writers were perhaps from Pluto for this one. I can only imagine the kind of groundwork that goes into creating a series as meticulous as Suits. I’m just happy that streaming platforms and channels go out of their ways to create content like this one – Suits, Sherlock Holmes, How to Get Away with Murder, You, Manifest, etc – and I hope there’ll always be more of the kind. While I admit that I love fantasy more and I’ll mostly prefer feel-good elements everywhere, experiences like Suits is what makes taste. I hear there’s a spinoff in the making. I hope it meets the benchmark set by this version.
