ACOTAR and my obsession with fantasy fiction

Books are a great feeling in every form, but truly for me, no genre ever beats fantasy fiction. The immersive experience of fantasy worlds with their surreal physics and swoon-worthy romances will never cease to appeal to me. I’m currently reading A Court of Thornes and Roses (famously known as ACOTAR) by Sarah J Maas. I’m only one book in and its such a struggle to put it down at the end of day. I could simply lose myself in Prythian and its beautiful landscapes.

The story of how I was introduced to Sarah J Maas is a rather funny one. For my birthday last year, my husband (who is not a bookworm even under gunpoint) googled ‘popular books of 2024’ and ordered the first one that popped up in search results. It turned out to be ‘House of Flame and Shadow’ by Sarah Maas which had just released. My poor man did not know that it was third in a series, nor had any idea what it was about, but insisted that I read it because that was perhaps the first book he had ever purchased. I had to make my own investments to buy the first two books in the series (lol) and venture into it – ‘House of Earth and Blood’ and ‘House of Sky and Breath’. 2024 thus plunged me into the majestic Crescent City world developed by Sarah J Maas and its safe to say that I’ve been obsessed with her ever since. Little does my husband know that he has delivered a platter of book boyfriends to me and I’ve shamelessly fantasized about them.

After completing the Crescent City series, I wrote about it (here) and expressed a willingness in the post to venture into ACOTAR because Sarah Maas delivered an orgasmic experience for fantasy lovers in the Crescent City series. Thanks to that blog post, my 2025 birthday present from the husband – surprise -was the ACOTAR series (lol again). I couldn’t wait to complete the book that I was reading then and jump into this series. 300 pages in, I’m already dreading the emptiness I will feel after completing the entire 5 book series – which I know will be soon.

Does anyone else feel this utterly unreasonable insecurity that you would run out of fantasy books, movies and series to consume? That’s how much I love fantasy fiction. I know I’ll never run out of them in my lifetime, and I can afford to devour them as much as I want; but I cannot have enough. I think fantasy fiction authors are God’s chosen minds. May there be an abundance of them!
