Asking the atheist

I wonder if the atheist ever seeks meaning to life

Beyond his mundane acts of survival he’s obliged to follow

And in the many circumstances that are way beyond his control

I wonder if an atheist ever questions the purpose of all he does in life.

Forgoing the millennia worth of religions and Godly constructs

And the infinite preaching about the universe and its ethereal manifestations

Discarding the fancy ideas of heavenly acquisitions in life and in death

I wonder if an atheist is ever content with just what’s visible to his naked eye.

Denying the comfort of placing an unearthly force in command of life

Disagreeing the conservative ways of being that defined many a history

 In attempts of radically resisting spiritual support when provided any

I wonder if an atheist believes a cynical mind is the epitome of all creation.

Lethargic with the poetry and interpretations of planets and constellations

Inconsiderate to the changing colours of the sky and their spiritual interventions

Unaware of the steadfast power of heartfelt prayer every day

I wonder if the atheist knows he misses out on life’s most wondrous dimensions!

      1. Just being cheeky. I’m an atheist and know many atheists and we all share narcissistic qualities. If you can’t see yours, that’s on you. But you’re clearly shrouded in self importance and think of yourself highly as you’ve responded to this woman’s work as if you know better and are better. No one is right or wrong, better or worse, more ignorant or more knowing. All of these concepts are human-made and therefor intrinsically perfect and completely flawed in finitude.

      2. I’m not buying this, Robyn. There is no reason to believe that you are an atheist, not if you wrote this “I think the atheists must all be narcissists.” This reveals that you do not think yourself an atheists. It appears that you are trying to retcon a poorly thought out false claim about others.

        If you are an atheist, then you aren’t a very bright one when you try nonsense like trying to claim an entire group as narcissists with no evidence.

        Now, you want to attack me for showing that your nonsense is wrong. I’m not narcissistic and that offends you for some reason.

        i do know better and am better than someone who tries to make false claims about others in order to pretend she is better than them by trying to pretend those that don’t worship a god like her are missing out on something.

        Many theists try these claims that atheists must be lonely, missing out on something, etc to convince themselves that they aren’t wasting their time.

      5. Duuuudddeee sheesh, check your anger and reflect on that! It can’t be healthy in your real-life to carry it around and I mean that in a human-to-human way. We’ve all got grief and shame bottled up and disguised as anger or sadness.. it’s totally okay to feel but like don’t project. I’m not here to fight on some poets WordPress about what it means to be an atheist rn. Let’s drop religious conditioning and stop trying to one-up strangers through the internet. Also I don’t know if you know who Neitzche is but it’s kinda atheist 101 to understand narcism is a big part of disassociating from a societally constructed world that’s largely been governed by religion… focusing on the self and self’s experiences looks narcissistic —as reflected in the poem and the comment I made to simply sstttiiiirrr thought. Had I known I’d be messaging a stranger during my bored down-time I would’ve never made that comment. But now that I think about it, I’m pretty glad I did cause general conversation is always a delight and this macho-know-it-all-saviorism complex is fascinating rn.   2. I’m an atheist, former Presbyterian Chrisitan. I’ve read the bible a couple of times, read the qu’ran, read the book of Mormon, read many myths.

    What would you like to ask me? A real atheist works better than your strawman.

    Let me answer your questions:

    We definitely do. My purpose is to be happy, to love my spouse, family, friends and pets. I am here to push humanity forward in my own little way. No god needed. All gods I’ve read about are petty ignorant things.

    Yep, we are. It’s nice to play pretend that some magical being agrees with me and protects me, but that isn’t true. I much prefer the truth. What is visible is wonderful to see and think about. No god or theists needed.

    Nope, we don’t, at least I don’t. I think that a inquiring mind is the epitome of the universe. Not atheists are cynical, nihilists or whatever theists want to pretend we are. I certainly don’t think some god made up by ignorant humans is.

    Nope, since those dimensions you want to claim exist cannot be shown to exist. Each theist wants to claim that their religion/god is the “most wonderous” and none of you can show this to be the case.

    The colors of the sky change without a god or gods. And prayer does nothing. If it did, then every pediatric cancer ward would be empty and every veteran’s hospital would be useless since no one would need them.

    1. Wow, firstly thank you for taking time to answer the writeup in such detail. I have a lot of conversations of this kind with a friend who is also an atheist. I would like to put it across that this was written with innocent curiosity and not as a judgment.
      I went through your blog and I see you have very interesting takes on topics relevant to this. Just want to bring to your notice that our experiences with God and religion may not be the same since my background is Hinduism. So the words like dimensions, purpose, cynicism and so on have very different connotations in my mind than I guess they do in your yours.

      But hey, your comment was a delight to read 🙂 I’m not having a go at atheists with this poem whatsoever!

        what are these things you claim exist that I would not know about? And can you show that they exist at all?

        You use the same baseless claims about atheism and atheists as other theists do, including Christians and Muslims. This is what I find most interesting.

      2. I don’t know if you have experienced the festivals and religious celebrations of Hinduism. Those are the wondrous experiences I am talking about because the atheist friend I mentioned does not enjoy any of those like we do. I’m not talking about some invisible dimension.       3. I’ve seen the various festivals of many religions. I do like the Hindu ones because of the lights and colors.

        An atheist can easily have “wonderous experiences”. They may not be the same as yours. Are they less for that?

      4. The thing is, I am closely related to a religious institution and witness the extends of human collaboration, sense of direction and collective conscience every single day. Faith brings people together like nothing else, makes them do wondrous things together. Its all because an invisible force that they believe in is holding them together.

        I’m not saying your experiences are any lesser. I’m saying that such levels of collective human experiences are very rare and its a pity some people miss out on them. Whatever your experiences are in life, I believe theists have them too.

      5. Faith also causes people to think that they are superior to other people and force their baseless beliefs on others.

        Humanitarian causes bring everyone together and no gods or baseless beliefs are needed.

        Atheists don’t miss out on collective experiences any more than theists.

  4. Really? This atheist finds all kinds of meaning in life that has nothing to do with religion or god. But let’s take your god you worship. Why would I want to worship such a foul being as your god? Especially when I am much more moral than your god and can prove it taking the examples of your gods actions from the bible.

    1. Would I sick two she bears onto 42 kids and have them ripped apart for three of them making a joke about a prophets bald head like your god did? Hell no. I might send them to bed without their supper or take away their draddle, but I would not put a brutal death penalty punishment by bears upon children making a joke. And I sure would slap that silly karen prophet for crying about kids making a joke about his bald head.

    2. Would I make parents cannibalize their own children for the crimes of the parents the way your god did? Hell no. I would punish the parents who committed the crimes, not the innocent child who had no part in those crimes, and whose only “crime” was being born to these parents.

    3. Would I order the ripping out of fetuses from pregnant women and the smashing of the bodies of infants and children to murder them because their parents either worshipped a different god, or your god decided that you should slaughter the towns and take their homes and lands because hey, god gave you these lands, which then allows you to justify mass genocides and murder of others. No thanks.

    4. Would you order a father to murder his daughter, cut her up into 12 pieces and then send a piece to each Tribe of Israel? Hell no.

    5. Would you punish murderous rapists who gang raped a concubine to death and attempted to gang rape a man, by ordering those same murderous rapists to go invade Jabesh Gilead, slaughter all living beings including the animals, except for the virgin girls and those? You can rape and force into Jewish marriage? Or order them to go to Shiloh and hide behind bushes and do the same to 200 more virgin girls coming out of the gates of Shiloh? Hell no, I would put to death the murderous rapists.

    I could keep going. But the truth and facts are? If you said no to any of these things? Then you are actually more moral than the god you worship and bow down to and call loving, kind, merciful, just, etc. REALLY?

      Just to let you know – I personally don’t connect to any of the examples you gave. I’ve been a Hindu since birth, the idea of atheism and anti-theism are very different around here 🙂

      2. Well, if your faith against religious faiths was grounded enough, you wouldn’t be ‘insulted’ by one poem you found on a personal blog. You would have laughed it off instead of sending lengthy responses explaining your stance and pointing fingers at mine.

        I don’t mean to insult anyone here but I don’t find the need to answer someone whose perception of Hinduism is limited to 7 levels of heaven and hell. Good day 🙂

        My faith against religious faith? Really? I have studied about each and every religion known to humanity in my 61 years. Hindu’s as well as Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. And what is amazing is? How all of you proclaim your’s is a religion of peace, love, non-judgment, etc and yet?

        ALL of you, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindu’s, etc have all committed numerous acts of mass murder, butchery, genocides. I know, I have studied these things. This is why I hate religions so much. Because religions are the biggest evils to all of humanity.

        Hindu’s brutally murder others.
        Christians brutally murder others.
        Muslims brutally murder others.
        Jews brutally murder others.

        ALL IN THE NAME OF YOUR RELIGIONS. Prove me a liar. Prove to me what I am saying are lies. I can post all kinds of stories of Hindu believers and practitioners committing many henious acts against fellow humans in the name of that religion.

        Yeah I have faith against religion, as being the biggest causes of death and brutality, war and genocides ever known to humanity.

        However, you cannot change my faith by calling me sick and twisted based on your overly generalized idea, sitting 8000 odd miles away from me. You have no idea what religion is to me and the likes of me so… I don’t know, your comments would do nothing to someone who’s been grounded enough.

      6. Oh and about the killings that have happened in the name of religion? Yes, I have to agree that it’s been terrible.

        However, I believe none of the religious doctrines have advocated it, I know Hinduism hasn’t. People have committed crimes in the name of religion as they have in the name of countries, states, families, love and whatnot. We don’t discredit everything, do we.

        “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps perpetrates it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it are actually cooperating with it.
        ALL Christians, Muslims, Hindus, etc who fail to speak out against their extremists? Who refuse to stand up to them and put a stop to them? Are just as guilty as they are, even more so. Because refusal to put a stop to your psychos of your religions prove that you all actually approve of what they are doing to others.
        When Christians, or Muslims, or Hindus refuse to stand up to their haters of their religions? Then that makes them just as guilty as their haters.
        I do not give a damn that this is a poem, you all insult us atheists by it and this Atheist takes none of this crap. I have again, studied your religions for literally decades, and your religions are the worst things that ever happened to humanity. You all fight for opinions and fantasies to prove which one of you has the better bullshit stories, and then you all justify your brutal actions against others using those religions against others, especially us atheists.

        In 13 Muslim countries? An atheist receives the death penalty and it is a brutal death penalty punishment.
        In the US? Christians do all they can to deny us atheists our rights. From denying us the right to serve on juries, or even to testify in a courtroom, denied rights to run for political office, even denied rights to custody of our own children. We got Christians screaming, foaming at the mouth like rabid dogs, how we atheists should be rounded up and executed, or denied all rights to even exist. Yet if we atheists stand up to this persecution of us? Then it is we who are persecuting the Christians.
        You religious freaks call yourselves the most moral of all of us, and yet? The history and truth of your religions prove otherwise. And the death toll of you religious people, due to your religious bigotry, hate and evil? Are in the literal billions. How the hell can you all call yourselves religions of peace and love, non-judgment, etc and your history proves otherwise?
        Time for all you theists to understand this at least from this atheists point of view.

      8. My friend, I wasn’t even alive when all the said killings happened in the name of religion. I have absolutely no role in attacking/silencing any community.

        Where I come from, religion means beautiful temples, celebratory gatherings and spiritual fulfilment. Kindly do not project your experiences/observations on a girl sitting in a remote corner of India enjoying her religious roots. This poem is not an attack on anyone whatsoever.

        May your fight against everything that has pained you end up in the way you hope for it to. I wouldn’t be a part of its consequences so… good to talk to you. 🙂

      9. Keep my views that gods are foul? Really? Gods are foul. They are the creations of us foul humans. If you look at the gods and goddesses and the people who created them? They are no different than we humans.

        Gods and goddesses are creations of the primitive minds of our ancient ancestors, who thought the sound of thunder was the voice of god speaking to them. They attributed all kinds of natural phenomon to gods and goddesses.

        Humans have been so freaking stupid. No really. See we have no freaking need for gods and goddesses created by the primitive minds of our ancestors who wiped their butts with their hands. No, for we have no need of created gods and goddesses, for it is WE who are the real gods and goddesses and as soon as freaking humanity realizes this, realizes what all these religions are, control of other humans to make those who push them rich and powerful, and truly start thinking for themselves? Then we will always have this freaking problem with religious god believers.

        And you want to accept the concept of 7 heavens and 7 hells? Why is one hell not freaking horrifying enough for Hindu’s that they gotta now invent 7 levels of hell? Like Dante did with his Divine Comedy?

      10. To want to believe in a concept of 7 hells. That is so sick and twisted and so S&M. How does one human even come up with that concept, not only of one hell, where peoples souls supposedly go get tortured for all eternity, but seven freaking hells.

        People who believe in this? Really are sick and twisted. They to me want to see fellow humans go and get tortured for all eternity and take freaking delight in it. And we wonder why we live in such a sick and twisted society. To take pleasure in someone being tortured for all eternity, or to even freaking suggest such a thing. That is pure freaking evil in my book of humanism.
